ABSTRACT
When a comedic television character calls a captured burglar “a bungler,” we laugh, because we know what he intends, and recognize that “bungler” is somehow apt, as well. But slips like this in the workplace don't always have such a happy effect. What they may accomplish is to make the writer look ridiculous, or worse, alter the message. Look at the following line, written by a quality assurance supervisor.
