ABSTRACT
GENERAL GOALS The general goals of clinical research are to identify the mechanism of the disease process and to determine the effectiveness of intervention in that disease process, generally with drugs, surgery, devices, nutrition, or behavioral changes. In drug research, the specific goals of clinical research include
determining the efficacy (effectiveness) and safety of a new drug, defining dose administration routes and frequencies, testing drug formulations, and exploring combination and adjuvant therapies.
