ABSTRACT

The term engineering is a derivation of the Latin word “ingenerate,” meaning “to create,” or “to contrive.” Design means “to plan and execute artistically.” Design in engineering perspective requires existence of need-genuine, revised, or generated; an analysis mechanism; and a graphical depiction of the process. To make the object by hand or by use of machinery in large quantities from a design produced earlier is termed “to manufacture.” A glance into the past, beyond the Latin roots of the words, to observe various facts that took place in our history, reveals interesting phenomena that are still common in today’s engineering design and manufacturing.
