ABSTRACT

There are numerous good arguments for and against the importance of each of these three issues. But they are arguments only of degree. No one seriously suggests that any of these side effects of fossil and nuclear power production has the least positive aspect. Thus, renewable power generation is a sustainable alternative to using fossil fuels or nuclear power, depending on something that is restored through a natural process, like sunlight, wind, or water power. Assuming that mankind exercises good stewardship over the earth, these resources should last as long as we and our planet do. In turn, this chapter will look at small hydro, wind, solar, and other renewable technologies in Section 7.2 – 7.5. Fossil and hydrogen fueled distributed generation units are covered in Chapter 8.
