ABSTRACT

The outstanding design properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics are their high strength to weight and stiffness to weight ratios. Correctly designed cfrp can be stronger and stiffer than a steel part of similar thickness and offer a weight reduction of about 35%. A cfrp has excellent fatigue strength and very good chemical resistance. However, being relatively brittle, the composites have no yield behavior and have poor impact strength. If fasteners are used, then Al cannot be used due to galvanic corrosion and the more expensive Ti has to be used.
