ABSTRACT

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esclentum Moench) is an herbaceous plant of the Polygonaceae family, which includes reum (rhubarb) and rumex (sorrel). It does not have any affinity for the Gramineae family. Generally, there are many species of buckwheat in the world, and mainly nine species have agricultural significance. Generally, Fagopyrum has two groups of species: annual and multiennal species. The annual species (A) are F. esculentum Moench, F. tataricum, L., and F. giganteum Krotov. The multiennual species (B) include F. cymosum Meissn, F. suffruticosum Fr. Schmidt, and F. ciliatum Jaegt. Among these species, currently, the most commonly grown buckwheat species is F. esculentum Moench (common buckwheat, or sweet buckwheat), while F. tartaricum is also available in some mountainous regions.
