INTRODUCTION

Early in this century, the concept of the gene as the unit of inheritance became widely accepted. At about the same time, it was also recognized that the gene could spontaneously change. It could be altered or mutated so that the appearance or behavior of the organism carrying the gene would also change. Once mutated, the gene would become stable and give rise to subsequent generations of that organism with this “new” characteristic.
