ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the processes of facility design and construction in general, and some of the specifi c options that can signifi cantly effect the outcome. We will start with a look at opportunities for the management of an existing manufacturing fi rm to shape the resulting designs. Then we will address the two principal design methodologies and explore some of their differences. Earlier chapters provided many of the technical considerations related to manufacturing. This chapter is intended to build upon that information in order to best support the real needs of the factory.
