ABSTRACT

In an ionized gas created by electric discharge, the formation of charges and the diminishing of charges occur independently and simultaneously. In a steady state, the number of electrons, ne, and the number of ions, ni, are determined by the balance between these two processes. In an ionized gas, however, there is a strong tendency for the density of negative charge and the density of positive charge to become equal. Because of this tendency, in certain types of ionized gas the system as a whole remains electrically neutral. Such an ionized gas is called plasma. The following sections examine the key aspect of maintaining electrical neutrality according to the illustration by Hatta [3].
