ABSTRACT

The purpose of pretreatments is to remove the surface contaminants, and thus create a clean surface on which chromium oxide can be grown, which then acts as the corrosion protective layer and the adhesive base. The conventional corrosion protection system with chromate conversion coating can be visualized by replacing the plasma polymer layer in Figure 28.1 with chromate conversion coating. The SAIE approach in corrosion protection has an important advantage of being able to eliminate chromate conversion coating, which is an environmental and health hazard, and achieve the same or better corrosion protection.
