ABSTRACT

The costs of the two coating processes for production of 28 million coated contact lenses are compared in Table 36.1. The cost of LCVD coater is roughly 12 times greater than that for the LBL coating system. However, the plasma coating is an

ultimate green process that uses a minimum of materials and there is virtually no effluent. Only 11 kg of coating materials (LCVD gas) is used to coat 28 million contact lenses. The coating yield is roughly 14%. The cost of coating materials is only less than $300 for 1 year’s operation. Since there is no effluent, no cost for the effluent treatment is involved.
