ABSTRACT
A loss of field (LOF) occurs when excitation to the generator field winding fails. This may be a result of equipment failure, inadvertent opening of the field breaker, an open or short circuit in the excitation system, or slip ring flashover. Whatever the cause, this condition poses a threat to the generator and to the power system.
