ABSTRACT
The purpose of any introductory chapter is to acquaint readers with the topic or topics covered by a book. Commencing with a definition of a content delivery network (CDN) we will describe its evolution. We will examine several types of networking technologies that were developed to deliver specific types of content as well as the rationale for the development of the modern CDN.
