ABSTRACT

In comparison, a large organization that is considering a trial of wireless mesh networking products will more than likely be hesitant to proceed because a positive trial that would lead to a corporate rollout would force the company into a single-vendor solution. As many readers are well aware, single-vendor solutions based upon proprietary products can result in significant problems if the vendor exits the market, decides to scale back support, or initiates an across-the-board price increase for the product or its support. The IEEE is working on the development of a standard for wireless mesh networking. The IEEE 802.11a, b, and g wireless LAN platforms represent the most rapid deployment of any LAN technology, wireless or wired. Since the introduction of the IEEE 802.11 standard, the a, b, and g extensions resulted in over 10 million wireless LAN adapters and a million access points being shipped each year for the past two years.
