ABSTRACT
Understanding the nature and scope of the fire loss problem is necessary to provide a basis for reducing fire losses. Losses offer valuable lessons because they provide the information needed to prevent or reduce the impact of similar losses in the future. While this chapter discusses the past, it more importantly presents the concept of learning from the past and applying this knowledge to future prevention.
