ABSTRACT
S ECONDARY wastewater treatment coupled with disinfection normally re-moves 85+% of the BOD and suspended solids, and nearly all the pathogens. However, even a properly operating secondary treatment facility achieves only minor removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, soluble COD, and heavy metals. Advanced wastewater treatment (or AWT) adds unit processes that remove more contaminants from wastewater than can usually be achieved by primary and secondary treatment.
