ABSTRACT

The size of particles plays an important role in their inhalation by humans and deposition in various regions of the respiratory tract, where they may cause adverse health effects. Figure 9.1 also shows the size ranges of particles that can be inhaled and deposited in three broadly defined regions of the respiratory tract. In this chapter and in Chapter 10 to Chapter 14, the focus is on aerosols that are encountered in occupational environments — the types of aerosols that are generated by different processes, their properties, the physical mechanisms by which they are inhaled and deposited in the respiratory tracts of human beings, and their measurement.
