ABSTRACT
Inhalation is the main route of human exposure to most aerosols. The transport of aerosol particles from the ambient environment into the respiratory tract through the nose and mouth depends on aerosol properties such as the Stokes number. Once the aerosol is inhaled, particles are deposited in different regions of the respiratory tract. This deposition depends on phenomena described in Chapter 10, such as inertial impaction, gravitational settling, and diffusion.
