ABSTRACT

The combined impact of these forces has greatly expanded the role of environmental technology from that of mitigating specific pollutants to one that requires a combination of technologies, incentives, and public cooperation and participation to make possible changes in societal processes and lifestyles that will reduce pressures on life-sustaining natural resources. This shift in environmental goals-in both the public and private sectors-is encapsulated in the concept of “sustainability” of the planet for future generations

—a focus that calls for action not just by government but by business, nonprofit organizations and citizens, either in cooperation with government or on their own.
