ABSTRACT

An extraordinary amount of chemistry in our world occurs in water solution. A large percentage of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, which are actually large bodies of water solutions. We are all very familiar with rain, which is a water solution. We are all familiar with lakes and rivers. These, too, are water solutions. All of us use water from wells and municipal water supplies for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and various and sundry other household chores; this water is also a water solution. Manufacturing industries use large amounts of water in their various processes for a variety of purposes, creating and using water solutions. Household waste as well as industrial waste is usually carried away by water, thus creating a water solution that can be hazardous and that must be properly treated so that we can all live safe and healthy lives. Chemists and laboratory technicians utilize water freely in their laboratory work, sometimes isolating and analyzing for chemicals dissolved in water while at other times creating water solutions in order to facilitate their work.
