ABSTRACT
Filters in which the primary characteristic is an abrupt change between a region of rejection and a region of transmission are know as edge filters. Edge filters are divided into two main groups, longwave-pass and shortwave pass. The operation may depend on many different mechanisms and the construction may take a number of different forms. The following account is limited to thin-film edge filters. These rely for their operation on absorption or interference or both.
