ABSTRACT

Tizard Bell Laboratories used one of the first lasers to study the roughness of the Moon’s surface. Many applications can be identified in which the laser boasts lower cost or better capacity than older technologies. The laser has found markets in the field of telecommunications, in the treatment of information and in its storage, in entertainment, in print, in material processing and in medical applications, to mention just a few. New words describe the use of light in its various applications. Electronics is the name commonly employed to describe the behaviour and applications of electrons. Even before lasers were actually built, they had succeeded in attracting some interest from the military for a long series of applications that might seem feasible. Military personnel also had in mind other applications, for example radar. The ozone present in the high atmosphere, in fact, absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation which has adverse biological effects and thus prevents it reaching the ground.
