Even scientists and mathematicians must endure critics. Some people just didn’t trust mathematics.
Augustine was criticizing astrologers, who used mathematics in constructing horoscopes.
Physicists were suspect also. In 1163 Pope Alexander III forbade ‘‘the study of physics or the laws of the world,’’ to all ecclesiastics, and ordered that any person violating this rule ‘‘shall be avoided by all and excommunicated.’’
