ABSTRACT
Basil Schonland came to Harwell, as had so many others before him, because Cockcroft was there. But Cockcroft had one, final, unfulfilled ambition which would take him elsewhere and then, despite his protestations to the contrary to his brother Felix, Schonland knew that he would be Cockcroft’s heir apparent because his old friend had told him so.
