ABSTRACT
To understand the way optical fibre devices work, it is necessary to
study some basic concepts of optics and physics. This chapter is
intended to introduce these ideas to those who may not have studied
the field, and to review them for those who have. The reader is urged to
seek additional information in the references at the end of this Chapter
