Advanced materials with improved specific properties, high-temperature capabilities and low density are needed for emerging high-performance aerospace systems. In recent years, the exceptional tensile properties of silicon carbide fibre have been utilized by combining the fibre with a titanium alloy matrix to form composites which have attracted considerable interest. This is because of their remarkable features which include high specific stiffness, strength, creep resistance (especially at high temperature) and high fatigue crack growth resistance. Titanium alloys reinforced with continuous fibres provide significant improvement in strength-to-weight ratio compared with unreinforced metals and other engineering materials.
