ABSTRACT

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) exhibit many interesting properties that are attractive for structural aerospace application. The fabrication process, however, needs to be very carefully controlled in order to obtain such attractive properties. Much effort has been paid to exploit suitable processes for each metal matrix composite, such as C/Al, SiC/Al, SiC/Ti and SiC/TiAl. This chapter describes the results of R&D on continuous fibre-reinforced metals and intermetallics for aerospace structures.
