ABSTRACT

Not until 1941 did a competitor to GEMA arise that had to be taken seriously, both in sonar as well as radar.

Lorenz had in 1935, as has been noted, a contractual agreement with GEMA for production in which Erbslo¨h and von Willisen had provided licensing to Lorenz of all their radar inventions, developments and constructions. Lorenz thus had access to GEMA’s patents and current work until Naval Command required the association of the two firms be terminated, but it was not possible to prohibit Lorenz, with or without the advantages accrued during the time of their co-operation with GEMA, from entering the field of radar on their own.
