Measuring light was becoming an increasingly organized activity at the close of the 19th century. Promoting the new cultural values of quantification, standardization and control were new groups of career workers. Photometry was building its own technological networks, and becoming an important agent in what has been called the ‘era of technological enthusiasm’1. What ‘professional’ alliances brought together its practitioners?
