Higher-order Modeling In understanding probabilistic or statistical coding methods, it is useful to think of the coding process or apparatus as divided into two autonomous packages, the coder and the model. The model, or statistical processor, passes information about the statistical nature of the source text to the coder, which then uses this information to encode the source text efficiently.
