ABSTRACT
Early in this century, statisticians in industry and government began to make use of samples to describe and estimate the characteristics of the populations from which the samples were drawn. The new science of quality control led to contracts between manufacturers and suppliers incorporating provisions calling for the acceptance or rejection of an entire shipment based on tests of a small sample thereof.
