ABSTRACT
In $2.5.1 the problem of wave scattering by a vertical barrier was solved using an integral-equation method. Here some of the background to this approach is explained in the context of a variational procedure. In particular, it is explained how the numerical procedure used in 58.1 is able to achieve high accuracy and how complementary bounds may be obtained for physical quantities.
