ABSTRACT

In the first sections of this chapter we introduce the basic astronomical notions that a statistician should know before embarking on the analysis of the galaxy distribution; some technicalities, such as coordinate systems and transformations, are given in the appendices. We present here an overview of galaxies and a description of the magnitude systems, followed by the construction of the distance scale ladder.
