ABSTRACT
We will introduce in depth most of the conventional methods to describe the discrete galaxy distribution. First, we will focus on discussing the relation between quantities defined for the situation of continuous density fields in the theory of random fields. In particular, we will see how the density field (intensity function) can be estimated from the galaxy distribution; other reconstruction methods will be presented in Chapters 5 and 9.
