Approximately 50 years ago, the determination of the structure of DNA ignited the modern era of molecular biology and thrust the determination of molecular structure and function to prominence in the quest to understand the workings of the cell. Beginning in the 1980s, studies in molecular biology accelerated with the development of rapid DNA sequencing methods, restriction enzymes, and cloning. In this era of expanding knowledge, efforts to define the principles involved in regulating cellular growth, development, and differentiation led to a plethora of theoretical models that ultimately required us to push forward with the elucidation of both the sequences of genomes and the structures of the gene products.
