ABSTRACT

A bioreactor, simply defined, is a vessel designed for the mass culture of cells. A bioreactor can be animal, vegetable, or mineral. Propagation of cells in animal ascites is still a viable method for small-to mid-scale (mg to g quantities) production of monoclonal antibodies

. Transgenic plants

and animals

are also bioreactors, in the broader sense, for the large-scale (kg) production of recombinant antibodies. More conventional types of mechanical bioreactors encompass a variety of technologies with varying production and scale-up capabilities.
