ABSTRACT
Despite more than 150 years of increasing clinical expertise with general anesthetics, their mechanism of action remains enigmatic. It is clear, however, that general anesthetics inhibit synaptic transmission in sensory, motor, and limbic areas of the central nervous system (CNS).
