ABSTRACT
In order to gain a complete grasp of speech coding, one must understand, and be able to utilize, the properties of human speech production and the human listening process. Knowledge of the linguistic, physiological, and acoustic levels of speech and hearing is helpful. One must also understand current technology in voice coding, information quantization, auditory processing, and the way the properties of the human auditory system have been utilized in present day acoustic coders to reduce coding bandwidth.
