ABSTRACT

Specific procedures should be followed to prepare a skull for facial reconstruction, whether the forensic art project will be done two dimensionally or three dimensionally.

It is critical that care be taken to protect the integrity of the skull as an item of physical evidence, and to ensure appropriate transferal from person to person or “chain of custody.” Equally important is physical protection of the skull since certain parts are extremely fragile. Occasionally, it is necessary to restore missing or incomplete areas of the skull before reconstruction is attempted.
