ABSTRACT
Forensic engineering for transportation accidents includes such diverse investigations as aviation disasters, railroad accidents, major highway (truck, bus, and some catastrophic automobile) accidents involving the transportation of hazardous materials, marine, and pipeline accidents. The overriding concern in such investigations is prevention of future accidents. As a result of formal investigations, products are refined and operating procedures are improved so that recurring accidents involving deficient products or ineffective procedures are minimized.
