Beginning in 1975, Catherine Fenselau and John Anhalt extended the use of MALDI-TOFMS (previously utilized to identify only molecules) to encompass identification of certain intact cells (e.g., Gram-positive bacteria, after they were gently heated and dislodged via laser from a “soft” matrix or substrate that FenselauAnhalt had adhered them to).
