Whiteflies (Aleyrodidae) include many pests of agricultural plants and vectors of plant viruses. The

current wide distribution of pest whiteflies is mostly the result of accidental introduction. The pests

have been introduced with their host plants, most noticeably over the past 20 years. Because of the

relative uniformity of adult morphology, taxonomic diagnoses of the whiteflies are based usually on

characters of fourth-instar nymphs (Mound and Halsey, 1978). However, it is very difficult to

identify whitefly species based on characters of pupal cases when faced with such biological and

genetic variation as host range, host-plant adaptability and plant virus transmission capabilities

(Costa and Brown, 1991; Brown et al., 1995a, 1995b).
