ABSTRACT

Consider a drop of blood forming on a person’s fingertips. Blood will continue to accumulate on the most dependent portion of the fingertips until a drop is able to break free and fall. According to Newton’s First Law of Motion, in the absence of the influence of a net force, a body at rest remains at rest and a body in motion remains in motion at a constant speed in a straight line or constant velocity. This law gives us the definition of a force: a force is any influence that can change the velocity of a body.
