ABSTRACT

Performance-based design (PBD) has emerged as the new paradigm in seismic engineering. The concept of

PBD is not limited to the field of seismic design, though the material covered in this chapter focuses

primarily on recent developments in earthquake engineering. Performance-based seismic engineering

(PBSE) is still an evolving methodology; hence, the information presented in this chapter should not be

should be viewed as an introduction to an emerging concept for seismic design of building systems.
