That same statement holds true today and is a main concern of water treatment utilities around the world. The importance of maintaining a microbially safe drinking water is emphasized by the problems when breakdowns have occurred. The largest recorded waterborne disease outbreak in the United States was the cryptosporidiosis outbreak in Milwaukee in 1993.
