ABSTRACT
While therapeutic aspects of lasers in medicine have been very dominant, tissue diagnostic techniques using laser spectroscopic techniques are now emerging strongly. Applications include endoscopic cancer detection using fluorescence, plaque monitoring in the circulatory system including coronary arteries, and tissue transillumination for optical mammography. Several factors contribute to the increasing interest in laser tissue diagnostics:
• Optical monitoring is non-intrusive in nature.
