The measurement of variation in written language is a powerful complement to its description and is therefore important to the successful analysis and interpretation of style. While interpretations of stylistic data are both qualitative and quantitative, the focus of the quantitative study of writing is on how much and how often forms are used by a writer (Johnstone, 2000:35).
