Spontaneous Activity

Several structures in the body are generators of spontaneous bioelectrical activity that can be easily recorded externally. All these generators are part of the nervous or the muscular system. For instance, neurons in the brain produce what is usually recorded on the scalp as the electroencephalogram (EEG), while contracting muscles give rise to the signals typically captured in an electromyogram (EMG).
