Pilocarpine, an antiglaucoma agent, is the chief alkaloid derived from the leaves of
Pilocarpus jaborandi, P. microphyllus,
and other tropical American shrubs of the family Rutaceae.
The habitat of
Pilocarpus jaborandi
is Brazil. The plant was introduced into Europe in 1847, and now is cultivated. The names
Jaborandi, Jamborandi,
and
Iaborandi
are applied natively, in both generic and specific sense, to several dissimilar pungent plants having sialagogic, diaphoretic, and sudorific properties, as
Serro’nea Jaborandi
,
Piper Jaborandi
(possibly the true Jaborandi),
P.
