Self-Help Group Treatments (see Hammond, 1995; Lawless, 1995; Douggans, 1996; Hoffmann, 1996; Thomas, 1997; Mitchell, 1997; Warrier and Gunawant, 1997; MacDonald, 1998; and Liechti, 1998).

Along with being more educated and more likely to report their health status, the majority of alternative medicine users appear to turn to it not so much because they feel dissatisfied with conventional medicine but largely because they find these health care alternatives to be more congruent with their own values, beliefs, and philosophical orientations toward health and life.
